NEBDN Topical Fluoride Course – A student perspective

I have recently completed and submitted my Record of Competence (ROC) for the Topical Fluoride Course.  The main reason that I opted to study towards this course and not the online certificate in fluoride application is because it is accredited by the NEBDN.

Working and studying during a pandemic has been challenging in all aspects.  The reduction of routine care really took an impact on the amount of opportunities there were for me to apply fluoride and also to be able to treat a wide age range of patients that is required.

However starting the pilot course at the beginning of 2020, Dental Training Ltd offered online learning alongside the ROC.  This really helped to gain knowledge of topical fluoride on top of applying it in a clinical setting.

Improve Communication and Confidence

I have also been able to improve on my communication and confidence with delivering better oral health advise.  This is part of the required ROC.  As a result of this, my confidence to advise and treat all age ranges has increased hugely.  It now comes very easy for me to step in and help the clinician, taking more responsibility in our patients care. For this course, you also look into the history of fluoride, oral conditions and contradictions to fluoride application, theories and evidence .  So you really do gain breadth and depth of knowledge along the way.

For anyone thinking about taking this post qualification, my advice would be to go for it.  Make sure you have a supportive practice manager and are working alongside supportive clinicians too. Without them, studying during a pandemic would prove a lot more challenging.  If they hadn’t been willing to take the time to let me gain confidence in treating patients under their direction, it would prove a lot more difficult!

Over all, I am very proud and happy with the outcome of me taking this course.  I wish anyone wanting to study in the future all the best!
