All qualified and practising sedation dental teams are expected to maintain knowledge and skills previously undertaken. This update in dental sedation is suitable for all dental professionals carrying out conscious, intravenous and inhalation sedation. This sedation update covers the following topics: Requirements including medico-legal and good clinical practice Second appropriate person including the multidisciplinary team Patient assessment Dental anxiety Anatomy and physiology Pharmacology Conscious sedation Intravenous sedation Inhalation sedation Oral sedation General anaesthesia Monitoring and recording Recovery & discharge We recommend that all students maintain a sedation folder for their practice. This should be readily available upon CQC and RQIA inspection. Suggested contents are outlined in the course module. This dental course does not cover the following subjects. We advise that you continue to update your knowledge and skills in these areas as required: Cross Infection Control Medical Emergencies Immediate Life Support Health and Safety All dental sedation professionals are required to undergo 12 hours of theoretical and practical study in sedation practice.
