Phlebotomy Skills and Techniques

Understanding and Applying Phlebotomy Skills and Techniques

Phlebotomy Skills and Techniques Classroom Course

It gives us great pleasure to introduce our first two-day Phlebotomy course, in association with Phlebotomy Training Services. The weekend course is accredited by One Awards and taught to Level 3.

During this two-day course, students will gain a practical and theoretical understanding of Phlebotomy practice.

Topics covered include:

  • Background of Phlebotomy
  • Heath and safety and infection control
  • Anatomy and physiology of the arm
  • Site selection and using a tourniquet
  • Complications that can arise when taking blood
  • What is expected of a Phlebotomists
  • The importance of correct patient identification and informed consent
  • The process of taking blood
  • The different types of equipment used in venepuncture and how to use them.

In addition to demonstration and theory, there is also role-play and practical guidance, to equip students with the skills needed to take blood efficiently. This is an excellent introduction to phlebotomy and no previous experience is required.

At the end of the first day, all participants are given a multiple-choice quiz to complete – and have to achieve a minimum standard to continue on to day two. There is also a programme of home study required following the course, which upon completion will provide 30 hours of verifiable CPD.
